If you want the image to stretch across the whole page, then we would need to look at a customised output for that. And therefore some controls to allow it to override the default way articles are sent to the page... But all doable.
Obviously image selection is important, but you can screw around with the thumbnail settings for any image and crop them to any proportions, eg.
